Stephen Fleming Steps Down as CSK Head Coach After 18 Years of Historic Success

Stephen Fleming has finally retired from his position as the coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK). This marks the end of what has been considered one of the longest and most productive coaching relationships in the entire history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). As per a statement released by the organization on Monday, both Fleming and the management agreed to call it quits in a series of constructive discussions.

The move also marks an end to the association between Fleming and the franchises of the Super Kings outside India. Fleming has quit from the post of head coach of both the Joburg Super Kings of South Africa’s SA20 League and Texas Super Kings of the Major League Cricket (MLC). While the former missed out on qualifying for the SA20 final for the fourth successive time, the latter finished as the bottom-ranked team in the MLC 2026.

In his parting note, Fleming thanked the long innings that he enjoyed with the franchise. According to Fleming, his 18 years with Chennai Super Kings was the greatest privilege of his career since the team had offered him memorable experiences through winning titles, difficult times, and lifelong friendships. According to him, CSK would always hold a special place in his heart even as he would continue to support the franchise in the future.

Fleming started playing with Chennai Super Kings before the maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2008. After that, he became the head coach in 2009 while working under the guidance of former captain MS Dhoni. As a result, Fleming managed to change CSK into one of the best performing teams in T20 cricket. In total, his reign was marked by five IPL titles which were won in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. In addition to that, CSK also won two Champions League T20 tournaments in 2010 and 2014.

Speculation surrounding the future of Fleming was high following yet another disappointing season for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. The team came in eighth position in the 2026 season after finishing last in the previous year, thus making it three years in a row since they have not won any titles. After their last game in the league this year, Fleming said that it was up to the franchise to decide about his future.

CSK owner, Rupa Gurunath, praised the immense contribution made by Fleming over the years and referred to him as the heart and soul of their coaching department over almost two decades. She also said that his contributions have helped build the identity of the team as well as their culture of excellence.

The CEO of the Chennai Super Kings, K.S. Viswanathan, also spoke about the qualities of Fleming and mentioned that the man had created a culture based on consistency, humility, and selflessness. Moreover, the CEO talked about how Fleming was able to inspire players and make them play the way they should.

The main moments of Fleming’s coaching period with the Chennai Super Kings include the two consecutive IPL titles CSK won in 2010 and 2011; the emotional win of the championship in 2018, which occurred right after CSK’s comeback after being suspended for two years; and the last title in 2023 after Dhoni became the captain again in 2022.

CSK has not yet announced anything about whom they are going to appoint as the head coach to take Fleming’s place. It is also unknown whether the club is going to continue cooperation with the other staff members such as batting coach Mike Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons.
